“Media doesn’t inform so much as it argues,...Context is everything, & we get very little context...” nyti.ms/1QURWNR N.Lear 20150628

Respectful, rational discourse is challenged by excessive small media clips

Interview of Norman Lear & Seth MacFarlane in New York Times June 28, 2015:
"NL: America’s biggest export is excess. We are excessive about everything. And we’ve become consumers of excess rather than citizens. Media doesn’t inform so much as it argues, bumper-sticker-style. Context is everything, and we get very little context now. We just get the 'Boom!'"
...
"SM: ...the massive overflow of media — too much media — has made it harder to have a discussion. The freedom to find answers through communication is punished when things are picked apart and used for profit as sound bites."

"Norman Lear and Seth MacFarlane and Their TV Families," interview in column "Table for Three," by Philip Galanes, June 26, 2015
"A version of this article appears in print on June 28, 2015, on page ST7 of the New York edition with the headline: All in the Family Guys"

Some questions to consider:
  • What do writing and reading mean to us?
  • What does being educated mean?
  • What does it mean to live a necessary life?
  • What significance is there for the learner if the result is shared, saved or not?
  • Does it matter whether you read the whole book?  Do you have to do the whole assignment?

Short Resources. Consider reviewing these to help you decide whether to read the book or instead of reading the book. It's a great book!!

Effective Practices in Personal Digital Archiving for Faculty and Students

On April 17 in FridayLive! we began “Saving Our Stuff,"  but we discovered that there was greater interest and more to discuss than fit in that hour.  Based on comments and requests, we scheduled this follow-up to go deeper into these 3 main categories:

Select, Organize, Make your own backup - How?  Options & Cautions
  • Disaster prep;  Preservation;  Save private copies or publicly accessible copies.
  • Enable Refind/Retrieve via Cloud, Auto Backup Resources (e.g., Evernote, DIIGO Dropbox, Google Drive, Google Scholar, Amazon Cloud, iCloud, Carbonite, Sugarsync, Transporter, etc.)  Free/Fee
  • Rely on Wayback Machine?  For what? Wayback Machine does not access our [nonpublic] past Blackboard or Moodle courses
  • LMS Options, Limitations

“Fair Use” vs. CASE method = Copy And Steal Everything… vs. Other Alternatives

  • CREATE: Find, Adapt, Select, Protect, Organize(e.g., DIIGO, Google Scholar, Evernote)
  • USE:  Citation, Permission & Payment:  Enable Refind/Retrieve/Usage; via Permission, Citation Tools, Digital Object Identifiers, Creative Commons, ImageCodr,
