"link rot,.content drift" Web destroys footnotes? Discuss online 2pmET Mar13 tlt.gs/frlv "Cobweb...Can Internet be Archived?"

What do Hillary & Petraeus have in common these days?  Some of these challenges:
  • Preservation & Citation
"...link rot, ...content drift, ...and reference rot... "  "The footnote, a landmark in the history of civilization, took centuries to invent and to spread. It has taken mere years nearly to destroy." - citation below
  • Unwanted Persistence (Petraeus?)
  • Disappearance (“Dog ate my homework” - Various?)
  • Complete Transparency Alleged (Hillary?)
  • Trolls & Bullies (Proliferation of untrackable, unremovable abuse)
  • Meta-Issue:  Access & Annotation (How did you find, read, comment, share…?)
Discussion will focus on 2 articles avail free online NOT REQUIRED BUT VALUABLE PREP (excerpts above from article #1):

News for "generations of autodidactic computer nerds" "YOU ARE NOT ALONE!"...or at least you don't have to be #TLTGroup

"She contemplated teaching herself, as generations of autodidactic computer nerds have done before her, and as her brother (a senior engineer at a major tech firm) recommended. But she doesn’t learn well in isolation, she said....."

The article suggests that many people might learn computer-related skills better in groups... perhaps even in courses!  See below for anecdotal explanation of why so many of us find this a shocking but welcome concept.

What Does Cognitive Science Say about Using Technology in the Classroom? Last week Penny Kuckkahn and Steve Kaufman helped us explore various apps for reinforcing learning principles in the book “Make It Stick.” This week on FridayLive!, Linda Nilson, will share information from recent studies that have found certain technologies to interfere with or impede students' attention, elaborative rehearsal,  encoding, and retrieval of material, while others facilitate these processes or can when properly managed.  It will be interesting to put these pieces together.  Join us at 2 PM ET.
