Real Revolution Not MOOCs. Real Revolution Big Open Mostly-Online Things with Unavoidable Minimum Impact. Good/Bad? Not a Rant?

Cumulative, Elusive, Obvious (Not a Rant?)

MOOCs are not revolutionary, but they are part of something bigger, more varied that is revolutionary:  big open mostly-online things like courses that are having unavoidable initially minimum impact.
As usual, the consequences of this revolution may be good and/or bad.  I hope we can try to make a difference and succeed.

MOOCs Non-Revolutionary;  Narrowing Too Soon
Self-identified "pure" MOOCs are the least revolutionary of the recent arrival of very large open-access fully online course offerings.  They are not revolutionary in the principles they espouse and attempt to embody.   Constructivism, connectivism, open education are well-intended and often helpful extensions of the progressive education movement that has been gaining and ebbing in influence and implementation for many decades.  They are not revolutionary in the impact they are likely to have beyond the first wave of zealots.  

I'm talking about the MOOCs that most loudly claim narrow, romantic ideals about the nature of human beings and, consequently, the kind of learning that most people "should" find best.  
Some of these recent self-identified MOOCs  are admirable experiments, but seem to embrace self-imposed and unnecessary doctrinal limits.  They could become more of a distraction than a contribution.  

It is much too early to focus the newly bursting energy for experimentation and competition in creating new KINDS of big, open, mostly online courses.  [It is still much too early to accept the current overwhelming reliance on access to text and asynchronous interaction via text.]

What kind of education is good enough for you and me? Silver Cloudians?

Steve, I like the rant!  How about also asking what's good enough for  you and me?  If you wanted to learn about a topic new to you, would you seek out a course offered in a face-to-face setting?  Would you consider trying an online course?  How about an open course?

Online Education:  Still better than Neo-Luddites fear, still worse than Techno-Zealots & Pseudo-Egalitarians claim;  but stakes, pressure higher.

Newest forms of online education have, once again, the potential for raising the floor of education worldwide - for providing useful education to millions who would otherwise get little or none [see history of UNISA, esp. during apartheid].

Meanwhile, the newest forms of online education, once again, are already being explored, adapted, and integrated within the wealthiest, most competitive, most selective colleges and universities.  Improving, once again, what many believe to be the best higher education in the world.  These institutions can afford to explore the newest technological innovations before they are proven effective - and cannot afford not to.  For these institutions, the financial risk is comfortable and the risk of missing out on the next "big thing" is unacceptable.  [Regents of University of Virginia did not understand that their institution is not solidly in this category.]

And, once again, the most challenging question is "How can new forms of online education improve learning for those in the middle?"

• Don't confuse the floor with the ceiling
  Don't confuse the floor (good enough for other people's children) with the ceiling (good enough for our children).
• Hybrids always win - for those who can afford them
• No Moore's Law for human learning
• We can't make most people learn in the same way that we do - the way we like best, the way we achieved our success.  This applies to:

• A.  Romantic Techno-Zealots (technology as individualizing, self-actualizing), 

• B.  Romantic Neo-Luddites (technology only undermines deep learning, human connections), and  

• C.  Hyperrational PseudoEgalitarians (everyone should accept what can be provided by the technology  and practices that fit within the boundaries of current methods of observation and measurement)

A29 September 7, 2012 - Same article, two titles.  Last sentence "Yet this scandal can have a positive outcome if leaders begin a searching examination of the messages being conveyed to our precious young people and then do whatever it takes to make those messages ones that lead to lives genuinely worthy of admiration."

Not a digression:  Did Howard Gardner know, control, or authorize re-publication and variations?  About title change?  Should the print version published Sept 7 have included a citation for the earlier published online version?  Is this "self plagiarism" or a widely understood and accepted consequence of an agreement with the publishers?    Either way, could this have been handled differently to more effectively, even a little, make this message one that leads to "lives genuinely worthy of admiration."

Voice of the Chat (VoC)  - Guidelines for an important supporting role in the TLT Group's (and other) synchronous online sessions.

VoC:   Closely monitors the text/chat area during a synchronous online session.  Brings participants' questions to the attention of  leader/presenters when there is a natural break in the presentation, or when leaders/presenters call for questions.  Some VoCs also enrich the text/chat by inserting their own comments, suggested resources, relevant URLs, etc.
